The Biberach Model:
Timber Construction Project Management / Civil Engineering

I study and help shape what will be built tomorrow

Training and studies in one

The Biberach model is a trial training programme in which young people complete a carpentry apprenticeship, a foreman and master craftsman qualification and an engineering degree in timber construction/project management at the same time, thus acquiring three recognised qualifications in around five years.

Your path: From journeyman's certificate to Bachelor of Engineering

Start your career in timber construction with an apprenticeship, foreman and master craftsman course and a degree. In five years, you will secure four qualifications and the best career opportunities.

The standard duration of the entire training programme is five years and three months. Graduates acquire the following qualifications:
- journeyman's certificate in carpentry
- foreman in carpentry *
- master craftsman's certificate in carpentry *
- Bachelor of Engineering degree in project management/civil engineering

* Foreman and master craftsman training are integral parts of the Biberach model and contribute greatly to the success of the project management / timber construction programme.

Phase 1: Carpentry training (25 months)

In the Biberach model, you sign a training contract with a master craftsman's business at the start and begin your carpentry training straight away. This lasts for 25 months and provides a practical foundation for your dual study programme.

Starting in your second year of training, you will begin the middle phase of your training with courses at the Wood Construction Training Centre and vocational school, which we offer in block phases (2–3 weeks of attendance in Biberach). Vocational school classes are held at the Karl-Arnold-Schule, while academic courses take place directly at the training centre.

At the end of the third year of training, i.e. after a total of 36 months, you will take your journeyman's examination at the Ulm Chamber of Crafts – the official qualification for your craft training. At the same time, you will complete the first module examinations of your degree programme – once you have passed your journeyman's examination, you will be ready to start your engineering degree at Biberach University of Applied Sciences.

Phase 2: Engineering studies (remaining study period: 6 semesters)

The carpenter apprentices enrol at Biberach University of Applied Sciences in the winter semester in the Timber Construction Project Management / Civil Engineering programme and begin their studies in the second semester. The pre-study internship that is otherwise required is waived. The basic studies completed during the apprenticeship are recognised by Biberach University of Applied Sciences. The fifth semester is a practical semester (see phase 3), and in the seventh semester, students are expected to work independently on a project (see phase 3). The programme is conducted in accordance with the study and examination regulations of Biberach University of Applied Sciences. Upon completion of all examinations, the university awards the academic degree "Bachelor of Engineering". This degree qualifies graduates to pursue a master's degree.

Phase 3: Polishing and master's examination in carpentry

The fifth semester (practical semester) can be used to gain further qualifications in the skilled trades. It is possible to take a course to become a certified foreman and, building on this, a preparatory course for the master craftsman's examination at the Wood Construction Training Centre. The final examinations must be taken at the Ulm Chamber of Skilled Crafts. Biberach University of Applied Sciences facilitates this additional qualification in the seventh semester. The foreman has learned his trade and can also work across different trades with his skills.
