Who is my contact person in the training programme?
  • During the course, the assigned training supervisor is the first point of contact, with the head of training acting as a higher-level contact.
  • The secretary's office is responsible for questions regarding organisational procedures such as course invitations, dates and travel expenses.
What personal protective equipment do I need?
  • Safety shoes (S1P) and appropriate work clothing are required as standard for every course.
  • A safety helmet is required for the timber house construction course, as this course involves crane operation. The safety helmet is provided, but you can also use your own approved safety helmet
  • The personal protective equipment will be mentioned in the course invitation.
Are tools provided by the educational institution? Can I bring my own tools?

All necessary tools are provided by the ZAZ. Trainees who have their own tools for working on the workpieces are welcome to use them during their training.

Why isn't everyone in my class in my course?

Depending on the course, there are between 12 and 18 trainees in a course. The distribution varies depending on the vocational school classes and therefore it can happen that trainees from several vocational school classes come together in one course and are not in the ÜBA at the same time.

How much fare am I entitled to and when will I receive it?
  • The basic prerequisite for receiving a travel allowance is that the employer is a member of SoKa-Bau
  • The rules for the travel allowance are set by Soka-Bau.
    • In principle, you receive €49 per month. For example, if a course lasts from 24 May to 5 June, you are entitled to 2 x €49.
    • There is an exception to this in the case of poor public transport connections. If the time required is disproportionately high, €0.30/km for travelling by car will be reimbursed, up to a maximum of €50 per course week. Everyone is entitled to a travel allowance, even if they carpool.
Will I receive a certificate after completing the course and how will I be assessed?

After each course, there is a course certificate with an assessment in the form of a school grade (digital in the kursm.app). The weighting is based on the evaluation key of the chambers of crafts and trades.

Where do I have to register as a commuter at the start of the course? Where does my first course day start?

The course always starts in the entrance area of the guest house (see directions). Here, the course groups are divided up for the course start at 7.45 a.m. and assigned to the respective masters.

What do I have to do if I am ill?
  • In the event of illness, notify the ZAZ and your employer by telephone or e-mail.
  • See a doctor (a sick note/certificate is required from the first day of illness).
  • Send the sick note to the employer and send a copy or picture to the ZAZ.
What does A-course mean?

There are always two timber construction courses in the 2nd and 3rd year of training. The first course is called the A course, the second course is called the B course and builds on the A course.

As a career changer, what should I practise before the course?
What documents/items do I need to bring to the courses?
  • Invitation letters, registration forms, textbooks,...
  • Documents and assignment sheets are provided by ZAZ. (also digitally via kursm.app)
  • A training folder can be purchased from us for €20. This contains all the course content in short form and is ideal as a filing system during the course.
  • Please bring various coloured pencils, squared A4 drawing pad, set square, metre rule, pencils and a calculator
  • Tablets/smartphones are permitted for instructional and training purposes
Can I take the workpieces I produce from the course with me?

The workpieces that are produced here can be taken home. Only one workpiece is available for group work.

How many trainees come to Biberach each year?
  • Around 600 - 650 trainees come to the ZAZ each year.

  • Around 82% of them use our guest house.

When can I start travelling and where do I register?

On Sunday, arrival is possible between 16:00 and 22:00. Please register with the youth leaders in the foyer of the guest house.

Will I be able to stay in the same room for the duration of the course?

Normally yes. However, it can happen that we have to reschedule at short notice.

Can I choose who I share the room with? How are the rooms allocated?

The earlier you arrive, the more opportunities you have to choose your room neighbours. However, we cannot guarantee room reservations unless you present a medical certificate confirming personal specialities.

When do I have to be back in the evening? What rest periods must be observed?

The rest and closing times are set out in the house rules, which you will be given when you arrive. You can also view the house rules on the CJD website . www.cjd.de

Is free WLAN available in the rooms?

Currently only in the lobby of the guest house.

Who is my contact person in the area of housing?

We have several youth leaders who will take care of your concerns. However, you can also contact any other member of staff.

 

What do I have to consider as a minor in the area of housing?

You must always sign in and out with the youth leaders. Your parents must sign both when you register and when you take part in activities outside the dormitory. We also need your parents' signature if you want to stay at the weekend.

How will I be catered for, can I choose from different menus?

There are always two lunch menus on offer, one of which is guaranteed to be vegetarian.

Can I store valuables safely?

There are toilets and showers in all rooms. Toilets are also available for use by the entire floor.

Can I park for the first night without a parking ticket?

Free parking is possible from Sunday to Monday. A parking permit must be presented at the latest on Monday for the snack break.

When do I have to leave my room and hand in the key on the day of departure?

On the day of departure, the rooms must be tidied up before the start of training and the keys handed in. The floors are then closed for cleaning.

When can I come for breakfast and dinner?
  • Breakfast: 06:15 am to 7:15 am
  • Dinner: 17:15 to 18:30
Can I wash my clothes?

Yes, please get in touch with the youth leaders.

What shopping facilities do I have around the location?

There is an Aldi supermarket, a drinks store and a REWE shopping centre next door.

Can I stay over the weekend?

Yes, you must register with the youth leaders by Wednesday.

How big are the rooms?

Most of the rooms are triple rooms. However, we also have a few double and quadruple rooms.

Are leisure activities offered?

Yes, we have a varied programme. You can find the programme on the monitor in the entrance area of the guest house, on notices or simply ask a youth leader.

What sanitary facilities can I expect?

There are toilets and showers in all rooms. Toilets are also available for use by the entire floor.

How do I get to the Angermühle, Rissegg-Halde,...

They are just a short walk away. We recommend that you team up with other trainees who have a car and drive together. Alternatively, we also hire out bikes and scooters. We therefore recommend that you arrive early, as numbers are limited.

Where can I park?
  • In the parking lanes between Aldi and the parking deck of the vocational school centre. A white parking ticket is valid for this, which can be purchased from the responsible training supervisor at the start of the course.
  • A limited number of spaces are available in front of the Leipzigstraße 21 branch (blue parking ticket)

What requirements must I fulfil in order to apply for the Biberach Model?

You must have a high school diploma or a technical college entrance qualification.

An internship in a timber construction company is also an advantage (but not mandatory).

A training contract with a carpentry company is mandatory for admission.
However, this training contract can also be submitted later.

For whom is the Biberach model the right educational pathway?

For all those who are interested in timber construction, would like to combine training and studies and later want to advance timber construction in a management position.

What is the application process?

The application deadline is always the end of May for the current semester / training start in September

  • If known: Name of the training company or training contract
    (the training contract can also be submitted by 31 July).

5 years and three months.

In which rotation does the vocational school take place?

There are a total of 3 theory blocks spread over the school year.

You will receive a block plan with the times at the beginning of the school year. The teaching block runs for several weeks at a time. During this time, you will live here in the dormitory of the vocational school centre. When will I be enrolled at Biberach University of Applied Sciences?

You will be enrolled at Biberach University of Applied Sciences after 1.5 years of training (from March in the third year of your apprenticeship). Before that, you will be an apprentice.

When does the polishing course take place and what does it involve?

In the semester break after the 5th semester.

Includes part 4 of the master craftsman examination and prepares students for the practical part of the master craftsman examination.

There is a vocational school for carpenters near me. Can I go there instead of travelling to Biberach?

No, that is not possible. The vocational school must take place in Biberach, as the university lectures also take place in Biberach on two days of the week during the theory blocks at the vocational school.

The vocational school is the Karl-Arnold-Schule in Biberach and the university lectures take place at the Bildungszentrum Holzbau, both in the same week on different days.

Do I have to register directly with the vocational school?

After admission to the Biberach model, the trainee is registered directly by us at the Karl Arnold School in Biberach.

What characterises the Biberach model?

The Biberach model combines vocational training, a master craftsman course and engineering studies in one place - unique in Germany. It opens up a wide range of prospects for management tasks, company succession or further studies.

What course content can I expect?

The current SPO (study and examination regulations) and the module handbook can be found on the Biberach University of Applied Sciences homepage.

Do I need a school leaving certificate when applying or is a half-year certificate sufficient?

The most recent certificate is sufficient for the application. As soon as the final certificate is available, it can be submitted later.

How many places are there?

There are 30-35 places available each year.

What qualifications will I gain during this time?
  • Journeyman's certificate in carpentry (after 2 years)
  • Certified carpenter foreman
  • Bachelor of Engineering Timber Construction Project Management/Civil Engineering
  • Master craftsman's certificate in carpentry
How long will I be in Biberach for the ÜBA (inter-company training programme)?

When does the masterclass take place and what does it involve?

The master craftsman course starts after the 7th semester in October and lasts until Christmas. The course prepares you for part 1 (specialised practice) of the master craftsman examination. The exam always takes place at the beginning of January.

Due to your studies, you will be exempt from Part 2 (specialised theory) and Part 3 (commercial content) of the master craftsman examination by the Chamber of Crafts.

I have successfully passed my journeyman's examination. What is my relationship with my training company now?

After passing the journeyman's examination, your employment relationship with the training company ends.

You are now a full-time student.

Is there a way to get in touch with graduates and current course participants?

Yes, the timber construction get-together takes place every six months at the training centre. All current participants, graduates and anyone interested in timber construction are invited.

What does the training company have to do? What are the differences to training as a journeyman with regard to the administrative work and the training itself?

For the training company, there is no significant difference to another trainee with a university entrance qualification. One difference, however, is that the specialised theory for all parts is taught and examined centrally in Biberach. There are no fundamental differences in terms of administration and training.

... About studying - Application and deadlines

Is there an application deadline or an NC for this degree programme?

The application deadline is always the end of May. There is no NC for admission to the Wood Construction Training Centre. After the application deadline, selection interviews are held on site in Biberach by invitation.

Are there partner companies for the Biberach model?

The apprenticeship can be completed in any carpentry business in Germany. You can find companies near you at www.zimmermeister-suche.de

How high are the travelling costs?

Travelling expenses are not covered for the vocational school block.

For inter-company training (ÜBA), travel costs are covered by SOKA Bau if the training company is a member of SOKA.

You will need to look for a room/flat on your own for the time after your training. As it is already clear that you will be attending the university full-time in autumn, you can look for a room early on.
